Choosing a Quality Herbal Supplement

Herbal supplements have plant origin, meaning they come from plants or parts of plants such as seeds and flowers.  For thousands of years, people around the world have been using herbs for medicinal purposes in many forms including teas, oils, fresh produce, tinctures and dried plants.

With the opioid epidemic we are faced against today and the increased interest in natural health, more people are turning to natural alternatives to get relief from their ailments.  With that, herbal supplements have become increasingly more popular and available.

There are hundreds of companies to choose from all claiming to have great products, so it is imperative that you do your homework and ensure you have chosen the right company.

There are a few ways to determine how to choose a high quality and effective herbal supplement.  Always start with reading the label. What ingredients are in the herbal supplement?

Many products have dozens of ingredients, some natural, some not.   When reading the label, you should look for binding agents, fillers, flow enhancers/lubricants, coatings/glazes, preservatives, colors and flavors/sweeteners.

Some of these include, Cellulose, Gelatin, Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Silicon Dioxide, Carrageenan, Potassium Sorbate, Titanium Dioxide and artificial coloring and flavoring.  It is important to note not all fillers and excipients are dangerous or harmful, but many times they are unnecessary. These additives will normally show under the “other ingredients” section on the label.

In addition to reading the label, it is important to know the following before proceeding.

  • You must have a knowledge about the role of the herb and for the condition it gives best results – there are many different types of the same herb and the results of taking them can be vastly different.
  • Must know about the effective part of the herb – different parts of the plants can give different results
  • Availability and cost effectiveness of the herb--Cost is an important factor for the selection of herbal supplements. Cheaper brands tend to use low quality ingredients which are adulterated and thus have low effectiveness. Choose a company that uses top quality ingredients and has good ethical values that will provide the best results for your body.
  • Any potential side effects of the herb – Even though herbs are natural, they can still be very dangerous.  It is important to understand potential side effects as well as interaction with other medications you might be taking.  It is always best to talk with your doctor and find the best balance between your medicines and herbal supplements.

OEssentials only uses all-natural herbs. We do not add any fillers or use any types of binders in our products.  We use a vegan capsule to ensure our product is not only organic and wild crafted, but compassionate towards animals.

As always, it is important to speak with your physician before changing your regiment.
